Amroha (Hindi: अमरोहा, Urdu: امروہہ) is a town in northwestern Uttar Pradesh state in northern India. It is the administrative headquarters of Jyotiba Phule Nagar district. It is located west-northwest of Moradabad town, on the Sot River.

Etymology

The name of Amroha may derive from its production of mangoes ("aam") and fish (rohu fish) or from the Sanskrit "aamr vanam" meaning "mango forest".

Geography

History

The earliest arrival of Muslims in Amroha was associated with Sultan Mahmood Ghaznavi in 1192.

The dargah (tomb) of the Sufi saint Hazrat Sharfuddin Shah Wilayat is located here. He is thought to have migrated from Wasti, Iraq via Multan, he was probably born in the year 1271 and he died in 1381. The dargah stands in a large enclosure filled with graves of his descendants. A legend says that within the temple area scorpions inflict no harm.

During Partition, as was the case in most areas in northern India, many of the city's Muslim residents migrated to Pakistan, either by force or choice.

Demographics

As of the 2001 India census, [GR|India] Amroha had a population of 164,890. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Amroha has an average literacy rate of 44%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; 59% of the males and 41% of females are literate. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

Amroha is known for its mangoes; according to BBC more then 1200 varieties of mangoes grow in Amroha [ [http://www.bbc.co.uk/hindi/regionalnews/story/2004/08/040807_mango_amroha.shtml BBC report] ] . Industries include carpet manufacture, wood handicrafts, and the small-scale production of cotton cloth.

Amroha is a marketplace for agricultural produce, its main industries are pottery making, hand-loom weaving, and sugar milling. Colleges affiliated with MJP Rohilkhand University are also located here.

Muslims constitute 70% of the population. Both Sunni Muslims celebrates festivals. Eid ,Shab-e-Barat ,Shab-e-Meraj are the popular festivals of Muslims.Sunnis on the occasion of Milad Un Nabi bring out large processions. Shi'a people gather in the city for processions.

People from Amroha often use the surname "Amrohvi" or "Amrohi".
