Plot

Miranda, who is a mermaid, swaps places with her human cousin, Caroline, while Caroline goes on holiday. Caroline, who is a schoolteacher, is identical to Miranda in appearance, so it is easy for Miranda to impersonate her. Caroline is engaged to be married — but Miranda does not like Caroline's fiance.

When Miranda falls in love with a human man, she arranges that Caroline's engagement to her fiance is broken off and for Caroline to becomes engaged to be married to the man who she, Miranda, loves.

A woman who suspects that Miranda is a mermaid, arranges for "Caroline" to sing at a concert, so that her true nature will be revealed. Caroline reads about the forthcoming concert during her holiday and rushes back to take the place of Miranda. However, although the cousins are identical in appearance, their singing voices are totally dissimilar — Miranda has a good singing voice — while Caroline cannot sing a note.
