icupdate =Jack Barrett (1910-1979), also known as Seán Barrett, was an Irish sportsperson. He played
hurling with his local club Kinsale and with the Cork senior inter-county team in the 1930s and 1940s.Playing career
Club
Jack Barrett played his club
hurling with his local club in Kinsale and enjoyed some success. The highlight of his club career came in 1933 when he won a junior county title with the club.Inter-county
O’Regan first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in the 1930s, however, Cork’s hurling team was in the doldrums at the time. In 1939 Cork reached their first provincial final since 1932 as Limerick provided the opposition. In a close and exciting game Cork emerged victorious by 4-3 to 3-4. It was Barrett’s first Munster title. The subsequent All-Ireland final against Kilkenny has gone down in history as one of the iconic moments in the history of the championship. On the day that
World War II erupted, a huge thunderstorm lit up proceedings atCroke Park as the final entered the last period. Kilkenny won the ‘thunder and lightning’ final by a single point – 2-7 to 3-3.In 1940 Barrett collected a
National Hurling League medal as Cork defeated Tipperary in the final. Cork later reached the Munster final, however, the game against Limerick ended in a draw. The replay saw victory going to Limerick by just two points.1941 saw Barrett adding a second consecutive National League medal to his collection. The championship, however, was severely hampered due to an outbreak of
foot-and-mouth disease . Because of this Cork were nominated to represent Munster in the All-Ireland series. The All-Ireland finals saw Barrett’s side take on Dublin in for the first time since 1927. The game turned into a rout as Cork won by 5-11 to 0-6. It was Barrett’s first and only All-Ireland medal. When the delayed Munster final was played in October Tipperary surprisingly defeated Cork. Barrett retired from inter-county hurling shortly afterwards.Provincial
Barrett also lined out with Munster in the inter-provincial hurling competition. He first played for his province in 1934 and quickly collected his first
Railway Cup medal following a victory over Leinster. Barrett remained on the team until 1940 and collected further Railway Cup titles in 1937, 1938, 1939 and 1940.Post-playing career
In retirement from playing Barrett became involved in the administrative affairs of the
Gaelic Athletic Association . In 1954 he became vice-chairman of the Cork County Board. He served in that capacity for five years until 1959. That year Barrett was elected chairman of the GAA. He served in that post until 1962. Four years later Barrett was back as chairman of the Cork County Board. He served in that capacity until 1971, however, he returned for a second stint from 1973 until 1974.Teams
