Ambewela is a town in Nuwara Eliya District in Sri Lanka. It is also called 'Little New Zealand'. It is situated 17 km south-east of the district capital Nuwara Eliya on the main up-country railway. The altitude of Ambewela is 6,064 feet. Ambewela is a service center to the New Gallway tea planting district.

Climate and Vegetation

Due to being situated above 6,000 feet in the Hill Country, its mean annual temperature is below 17.5°C. Winter Frost is common. Ambewela can boast of being the widest and highest grassland in Sri Lanka. [http://www.alawathugoda.com/nature/ambewela.htm]

Importance and Economic Activities

Because of its pristine climate and vegetation conditions in the country it provides unique economic opportunities. These conditions are ideal for dairy farming. Sri Lanka's only milk powder factory is situated there. Ambewela farm and New Zealand farm the two animal husbandries have Ayrshire cattle and Friesian cows respectively.

Horticulture is a small scale economic activity in the area.

Flora and Fauna

Sambar Deer, Leopard, Elephant are the mammals inhabiting forest cover around Ambewela. Ambewela is also a paradise for bird watchers, who'll be lucky to see some endemic birds of Sri Lanka.

Ambewela situated en route to Horton Plains National Park which is famous for 'Maha Rath Mal' flowers.
