RSPB Strumpshaw Fen

RSPB Strumpshaw Fen

RSPB Strumpshaw Fen is a nature reserve in the care of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. It is situated at Strumpshaw Fen, a fen on the River Yare in Norfolk, England.

It is one of the few breeding sites in Great Britain of the Swallowtail Butterfly.

During the summer months a meadow walk is open that is a riot of wild flowers and butterflies of all sorts. The woodland walks are worth a look too. On the whole this reserve rewards patience and dedication, do not go here if you want instant gratification, because it wont be for you. Time spent sitting and waiting will often be rewarded.

Birds of note that can be seen here include; Kingfisher, Marsh harrier, Hen harrier, summer migrants such as Reed warblers, Black Caps, Whitethroat. Waterfowl include Gadwall, Great Crested Grebe and Little Grebes.

Warning: wear good walking boots, a full circuit will take a long time!
