KIAS was founded in 1996 and currently has three schools: Mathematics, Physics, and Computational Sciences. Its primary aims are to provide researchers in pure mathematics and theoretical physics environment to concentrate on their research without other duties. As its name suggests, this institute was founded modeled on IAS at Princeton University, though unlike its original, KIAS is a government funded research institute. Currently, KIAS is a subordinary institute of KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology).
