The 428th Fighter Squadron (428 FS) was most recently part of the 27th Fighter Wing at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico. It operated F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft while conducting air superiority missions.

Mission

History

The 428th flew mainly ground support, armed reconnaissance, and some counter air, sorties against the Luftwaffe from, 25 April 1944-8 May 1945. It flew interdiction, close air support, and escort sorties against the enemy in Korea from, 1 August 1952-27 July 1953. The squadron also flew close air support, and some escort and counter air, sorties against the enemy in Southeast Asia from, November 1964-March 1965. Detachment 1 also flew night combat sorties against North Vietnam from, 25 March-c. 21 November 1968. The 428th Squadron went on to fly interdiction and close air support sorties over North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from, 11 January-15 August 1973. The 438th was an operational F-4, 1977-1980, and F-16, squadron, 1980-1989. It also provided F-111 flight training from, 1990-1995.
