Rose Garden Coburg

The Rose Garden in Coburg is a park in the Ketschen-outskirts between the Ketschentor (town gate) and the Angerturnhalle (gymnasium). In former times was at that place the "Zollbauernwiese", a grassland, which bought the city of Coburg in 1846. In 1906, the Sintflutbrunnen (deluge-fountain) was build by Ferdinand Lepcke at the south-side of the Rose Garden. The zenith of the Rose Garden was in 1929, as the German Rose-Revue was arrangend with 200.000 visitors. Until today, the Rose Garden is for the citizens a place for calm and recuperation.

Reconstruction

When the congresscentre was build in the 1960s at the north-side, the Rose Garden was converted. The complex parc became a open and clear plain, also a big lawn was build, especially in the middle of the parc. But thus the garden lost his speacial congeniality and the citizens were not pleased, because the reconstrauction was quite radical and many details disappeared. Between 1987 and 1988 the Rose Garden was build around again and this time they paid especially close attention to a natural and free concept, thus the garden got a new identity. Since that time there are over 72 types of roses in the parc. Furthermore there was build a palm-house and some biotopes.

Recreation centre

Since then the rose garden is inner-city recreation centre. Despite his location near the streets, the noise exposure is low and through the growth of the plants the appearance is quite good. The big lawns are used in the summer as places for picnics. The rose garden is free accessible and the admission is free. Since 2007 there is a festival in the rose garden every year (Sintflutbrunnenfest).

Commemoratives plaques

Moreover there are two commemoratives plaques in the rose garden, on for Johann Strauss, who married in the town hall of Coburg and he stayed in Coburg until he died. In the "Alexandrinenstraße" was unteil 1988 the mansion, there he worked and lived. The other commemorative plaque is for Julius Popp, who was on of the creators of the rose garden.

Palmhouse

At the south-side of the rose garden, beside the fountain, is the palmhouse of Coburg, which was openend the 10th march 1984 and has a area of 255qm. The building (20x15m) is subdivided vestibule and the main-building. There are various types of orchids, bamboo, cactus and even animals (birds). The house is open the whole year and the admission is free.

Congresscentre

At the north-side of the rose garden is the congresscentre of Coburg. The building, finalised in 1962, is a modern build out of glas and iron and has a great lucency. Inside are two big halls for congresses with 1100 places and other rooms for conferences. Also you find a restaurant in it, which has a great patio where you have a panoramic view on the rose garden in summer.

Plans for future

The future of the rose garden and the congresscentre is uncertain. The new concept for the city centre ("Neues Innenstadt Konzept") plans a radical reconstruction of the garden and the demolition of the congresscentre. Also the fountain shall be put to the north-side of the rose garden. When and if these plans are realized is not defined, but in May 2008, the contest for the architects was finished.
