James E. Day

James E. "Jim" Day (born July 7, 1946 in Thornhill, Ontario) is a Canadian Olympic equestrian show jumping champion and thoroughbred horse trainer.

Jim Day first came to international prominence at the 1967 Pan American Games when he won gold in the individual equestrian competition. In 1968, he was a member of Canada's gold-medal equestrian team at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City. At 22 years of age, Day was the youngest member of the show jumping team. In the 1972 Olympics in Munich he finished 4th individually, losing the bronze by one-quarter of a time fault. As a teenager, Day had become acquainted with Ernie Samuel (1931-2000) who at the time was also interested in show jumping. In 1971, Ernie Samuel, by then a successful businessman, purchased his first thoroughbred race horse and offered Day the job of training for his newly formed Sam-Son Farm. During the next quarter century, Day helped build the Farm into one of the top racing and breeding operations in North America, culminating in 1991 with the Eclipse Award as outstanding owners after the operation established a new world record for race earnings.

Among his numerous racing accomplishments, horses trained by Jim Day won two American Eclipse Awards, Canadian Horse of the Year honors five times, the Queen's Plate twice, the Breeders' Cup Distaff, the Canadian Triple Crown (1991), plus he was voted Canada's Sovereign Award for Outstanding Trainer on four occasions.

In 1995, Day left the employ of Sam-Son Farm and continues training for others. In 1997 he became only the third trainer to ever win Arlington Park's Mid-America Triple. His horse Honor Glide won the three races made up of the Arlington Classic Stakes in late June, the American Derby in July, and the Secretariat Stakes in August.

Jim Day was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1968 and is a member of the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame. Persondata
