David McWilliams (Irish musician)

David McWilliams (4 July, 1945 - 8 January, 2002) was an Northern Irish singer, songwriter, and guitarist.

Born in Belfast he was perhaps most popular was his 1967 song, "Days of Pearly Spencer". The lyrics were inspired by the fate of a homeless friend of his. Although it never charted in Australia, the song did receive good radio airplay. A 1992 cover version by Marc Almond (with an additional verse written by Almond, giving the song a more optimistic tone) became a British No. 4 hit.

Although McWilliams never had a hit single in the United Kingdom, he was popular on continental Europe (Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands) and Japan. McWilliams died of a heart attack at his home in Ballycastle in 2002.

McWilliams song, "Can I Get There By Candlelight?", was first released in 1968, and was used for the theme of a Dutch radio programme "Candlelight" with Jan van Veen.
