Pooley won the Trofeo Alfredo Binda UCI Road World Cup event in Italy in 2008. Pooley lived and was educated in Norwich at Norwich High School for Girls and then Norwich School before attending Cambridge university. She currently lives in Switzerland and is studying for a PhD in soil engineering. She did not start cycling until at Cambridge after suffering a running injury, which forced her away from cross country, a sport she had competed for her school in. Her first successes at University competition came in the triathlon, where she won an University Sporting Blue.
