Talas Ala-Too Range

Talas Ala-Too Range

The Talas Ala-Too range (Kyrgyz: Талас Ала-Тоосу; IPA2|tɑˈlɑs ɑlɑˌtoːsu) is a mountain range (reaching up to 4,488m) in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan in Central Asia. In Kyrgyzstan, it spans three provinces: Talas, Jalalabat, and Chüy. Its peaks serve as a border between Talas and Jalalabat provinces, Talas and Chüy provinces, and part of southwestern Talas province with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. There are four highway passes along the range, which also mark the borders of the provinces: Ötmök pass and Ala-Bel pass between Talas and Chüy provinces, and Kara-Buura pass and Terek pass between Talas and Jalalabat provinces.

The mountain range, a western extremity of the Tian Shan, is mostly located in Kyrgyzstan. The range rises up in the northwest of the country, south of the city of Talas and east of the southern Kazakh city Taraz, joining further south with the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range, which itself rises north from the Talas River. To the south it meets the Naryn River valley.
