Camp Candoit, trained three
World War II units that stormed Pacific beaches including those onNew Guinea . [ [http://www.falgen.org/Jim/historical_store.htm Historical Store] ] It was home to the 594th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment, which was a branch of the 4th Engineer Special Brigade. It was paired up withCamp Havedoneit andCamp Washburn , which were located nearby. The beach landings that were performed in the bay stirred up sediment which ruined the quality of theoyster beds. In the early 1990's, oil was discovered in the water. After an investigation, it was discovered that the oil was coming from underground tanks dating from World War II. The tanks were subsequently removed.References
