Alex J. Stringer

Alex J. Stringer

Alexander John Stringer (died February 13, 1969) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1946 to 1949.

His father was the Rev. I.O. Stringer of Toronto, Ontario.

Stringer served overseas in World War II, and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Canadian Navy.

In January 1946, the province of Manitoba held a special election for Manitobans who had served overseas in World War II, and were unable to cast ballots in the 1945 provincial election. Stringer was elected as the Navy representative, and took his seat accordingly. Though elected as an independent, he sat with the Progressive Conservatives and was a backbench supporter of the province's coalition government.

He ran for re-election in the 1949 provincial election, but fared poorly. Although he was the only coalitionist Progressive Conservative to run in the four-member constituency of Winnipeg South, he nonetheless finished last in a field of seven candidates. Anti-coalition Progressive Conservative Dufferin Roblin won the constituency's fourth seat.
