Disease of joints due to mechanical trauma. There is major disturbance in homeostasis of extracellular matrix with cartilage degradation (involving matrix metalloproteinases) and loss of normal joint function. Unlike rheumatoid arthritis there is not an autoimmune element and, though there is inflammation, it is generally considered to be secondary rather than causative.
