"While The Clock Ticked" is Volume 11 in the original The Hardy Boys book series published by Grosset & Dunlap.

--Plot--When a man gets death threats and ask for Fenton Hardy, his sons step in and help him. He tests them by letting them investigate his house, but are nearly run down by a car. When they met up with policeman Con Riley, they find out the car's driver may be a harbor thief, and the mystery ensues....

PLOT (ORIGINAL EDITION)A guy named Ray Dalrymple of Lakeside gets death threats and shows up at the Hardy's house seeking Fenton Hardy's assistance. Frank & Joe offer to help, but he's at first reluctant . At last, he agrees. Soon after that, during a hike with their friends, they are nearly ran over by a car, then investigate the Purdy place. After that, they make Chet hunt all over the place for a suitable resting spot.

Eventually, they find that the death messenger was a little device placed in the chimney powered by a storage battery. The macine would go into the secret roomvia chimney, deposit the threats, and go back up.
