Judgment Day (2008) was a form of sports entertainment in which theatrical events are combined with a competitive sport, pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The event took place on May 18, 2008 at the Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska and featured talent from all WWE's three brands: Raw, SmackDown, and ECW brands.cite web|url=http://www.wwe.com/schedules/events/eventdetail/?id=5767262|title=WWE Presents Judgment Day - May 18, 2008|accessdate=2008-04-30|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment] It was the tenth annual Judgment Day event. Professional wrestling is a type of sports entertainment in which theatrical events are combined with a competitive sport. The buildup to the matches and the scenarios that took place before, during, and after the event were planned by WWE's script writers. The event starred wrestlers from the Raw, SmackDown! and ECW brands: storyline expansions of the promotion where employees are assigned to wrestling brands under the WWE banner. The event featured a card, which contained matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted storylines. Wrestlers portrayed either a villainous or fan favorite gimmick, as they followed a series of events which generally built tension, leading to a wrestling match.

The card, or lineup of matches, featured a total of seven contests: four standard one-on-one matches, one Tag Team match, one Triple Threat match, and one Steel Cage match. Each of the standard one-on-one matches could have been won by one of two ways (pinfall and submission. A championship could have been won only via pinfall or submission, but could have been retained via pinfall, submission, countout, disqualification, a draw or no-contest. Seven matches, performances with pre-determined outcomes between wrestlers with fictional personalities portrayed as real, were featured on the event's card.

The main event was a Steel Cage match, a match fought within a cage formed by placing four sheets of mesh metal around, in, or against the edges of the wrestling ring. WWE Champion Triple H defeated Randy Orton to retain his championship. The predominant match on the SmackDown brand was Edge versus The Undertaker for the vacant World Heavyweight Championship.cite web|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/judgmentday/matches/5767288/results/|title=Still no World Heavyweight Champion|last=Passero|first=Mitch|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment|accessdate=2008-05-18|date=2008-05-18] Undertaker won the match by countout, but did not win the title since championships cannot be decided by countout or disqualification. The primary match on the ECW brand was a tag team match for the WWE Tag Team Championships between champions The Miz & John Morrison and Kane & CM Punk. Miz and Morrison won the match and retained the titles.cite web|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/judgmentday/matches/7039810/results/|title=Sunday night delight

Background

The main event at Judgment Day on the Raw brand was fought in a Steel Cage match. The match was contested for the WWE Championship, in which Triple H (Paul Levesque) defended the title against Randy Orton. The buildup to the match began after Backlash, WWE's previous pay-per-view event, Triple H last eliminated Randy Orton in a Fatal Four-Way Elimination match, also involving John Cena and John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL), to win the WWE Championship. The main feud on the SmackDown brand was between The Undertaker (Mark Calaway) and Edge (Adam Copeland), with the two feuding over the vacant World Heavyweight Championship. At Backlash, The Undertaker defeated Edge to retain the World Heavyweight Championship by forcing him to submit to the gogoplata.cite web|url=http://www.hoffco-inc.com/wwe/ppv/ppv/bkl08.html|title=WWE Backlash 2008|accessdate=2008-06-17|publisher=Hoffco] On the May 2 edition of "SmackDown", authority figure Vickie Guerrero stripped The Undertaker of the title after claiming the gogoplata was an illegal submission hold. [cite web |url= http://www.wwe.com/shows/smackdown/articles/6445718/titleturmoil |title=Title turmoil |date=2008-05-02|first=Louis|last=Dee|accessdate=2008-05-03|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment] The following week, Guerrero booked Undertaker in a match for the vacant title at Judgment Day against Edge, who last eliminated Batista (David Bautista, Jr.) in a battle royal, an elimination style match where the last person in the ring is the winner, to become the number one contender. Another feud from Raw was between Shawn Michaels (Michael Hickenbottom) and Chris Jericho (Christopher Irvine). At Backlash, Michaels defeated Batista (with Jericho as the special guest referee).cite web|first=James|last=Caldwell|url=http://pwtorch.com/artman2/publish/PPV_Reports_5/article_25415.shtml|title=CALDWELL'S WWE Backlash Report 4/27: Ongoing "virtual time" coverage of PPV|accessdate=2008-09-25|date=2008-04-27|publisher=UGO Networks|work=PW Torch] During the match, Michaels countered a Batista Bomb attempt, and appeared to have legitimately injured his knee. On the April 28 edition of "Raw", Jericho claimed that Michaels faked his knee injury to allow him to defeat Batista at Backlash.cite web|first=Lennie|last=DiFino|date=2008-04-28|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/raw/archive/04282008/|title=Hear ye, hear ye|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment|accessdate=2008-05-08] [cite news|url=http://pwtorch.com/artman2/publish/TV_Reports_9/article_25439.shtml|title=KELLER'S WWE RAW REPORT 4/28: Ongoing "virtual time" coverage of live USA telecast |last=Keller|first=Wade|date=2008-04-28|work=PW Torch|publisher=UGO Networks|accessdate=2008-09-25] The following week, it was announced that Jericho would face Michaels in a match at Judgment Day. [cite web|first=Andrew|last=Rote|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/raw/archive/05122008/|title=No time wasted|accessdate=2008-06-17|date=2008-05-12|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment] Four days later, on the May 16 edition of "SmackDown", Batista promised to hurt Michaels for faking his injury. [cite web|first=Mitch|last=Passero|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/smackdown/archive/05162008/|title=Fear and loathing in Grand Rapids|accessdate=2008-09-24|date=2008-05-16|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment]

One more rivalry from "Raw" heading into Judgment Day was between John Cena and John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL). In the Fatal Four-Way Elimination match at Backlash, Cena eliminated JBL by making him submit to the STFU. On the April 28 edition of "Raw", JBL challenged Cena to a match at Judgment Day, which was made official on WWE's website.

Event

Before the event went live on pay-per-view (PPV), Hardcore Holly (Bob Holly) and Cody Rhodes (Cody Runnels) defeated Santino Marella (Anthony Carelli) and Carlito (Carly Colón) in a dark match to retain the World Tag Team Championship.

Preliminary matches

The first match that aired live on pay-per-view was between John Cena and John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL). Layfield dominated most of the match and worked on Cena's recently repaired shoulder. He hit brutal punches and applied brutal submission maneuvers on Cena. Cena tried to perform an F-U on JBL but collapsed due to his pain and was unable to hit the maneuver. JBL hit a Clothesline from Hell on Cena before hitting him in head. He went for another Clothesline from Hell but Cena ducked and performed an FU on JBL and pinned him to win the match. The second match was for the WWE Tag Team Championship between the defending champions, John Morrison (John Hennigan) and The Miz (Mike Mizanin) and ECW Champion Kane (Glen Jacobs) and Mr. Money in the Bank CM Punk (Phil Brooks). The challengers, Kane and Punk were in control for the majority of the match. But in the end, Kane chokeslammed Miz outside the ring. Punk was distracted as Morrison hit him with a Moonlight Drive and pinned him to win the match and retain the tag titles.

The third match was a non-title match between Shawn Michaels and WWE Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho. During the match, both men reversed each other's maneuvers and attempted near-falls on each other but were unsuccessful. They hit each other risky high-flying moves before Jericho attempted the Walls of Jericho on Michaels. Michaels caught Jericho and countered it into a straddle pin to take the win. After the match was over, both men shook hands with each other. The fourth match was a divas triple threat match for the WWE Women's Championship between defending champion Mickie James, Beth Phoenix (Elizabeth Carolan) and Melina (Melina Perez). Phoenix dominated the champion and Melina for most of the match. She even managed to pick both of them above her head but was unable to control it and Melina took advantage and threw her outside the ring. James hit Melina with a Mickie DT and pinned her to win the match and retain the title.cite web|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/judgmentday/matches/52676103211112/results/|title=Mickie: The ultimate Triple Threat|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment|last=Medalis|first=Kara A.|accessdate=2008-05-18|date=2008-05-18]

Main event matches

The fifth match was for the vacant World Heavyweight Championship between The Undertaker and Edge. They both battled inside the ring and their action spilled to the outside. Undertaker was able to enter the ring before referee's 10 count but Edge failed. Undertaker won by countout and was given the World Heavyweight Championship until authority figure Vickie Guerrero said that a title could not change hands via countout, therefore the title was still vacant. Undertaker responded by hitting a Tombstone Piledriver on Edge.

Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP) (Alvin Burke, Jr.) came out and issued an open challenge to anybody who could defeat him. WWE United States Champion Matt Hardy came out but said that he would not wrestle MVP, instead his brother Jeff Hardy would wrestle MVP. Hardy came out and MVP knocked him out many times during the match and hit many risky maneuvers before Hardy connected with a Whisper in the Wind on MVP followed by a pinfall victory.cite web|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/judgmentday/matches/526761032111121/results/|accessdate=2008-05-18|title=Something to prove|last=DiFino|first=Lennie|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment|date=2008-05-18]

The main event was a Steel cage match between defending champion Triple H and Randy Orton for the WWE Championship. When the bell rang, Orton quickly bolted for the cage door but Triple H prevented him from escaping. They both exchanged punches with each other until Triple H locked in a figure four leglock on Orton. The match came to an end when Orton tried to hit Triple H with a running punt to the head, but instead Triple H hit Orton in the face with a steel chair, that Orton brought into the match earlier, which led to Triple H to tuck Orton's head between his knees and lifted them up to slam his head to the mat, a move Triple H calls the "Pedigree". Triple H pinned him to retain the WWE Championship.

Aftermath

The next night on "Raw", authority figure William Regal announced that the main event would be a tag team match pitting WWE Champion Triple H and John Cena against Randy Orton and John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL).cite web|first=Hunter|last=Golden|url=http://www.wrestleview.com/results/raw/raw2008/1211254241.shtml|title=Raw Results - 5/19/08 - Kansas City, MO (Triple H/Cena team, more)|accessdate=2008-08-28|date=2008-05-19|publisher=WrestleView.com] cite web|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/raw/archive/05192008/|title=One night stood up|first=Lennie|last=DiFino|date=2008-05-19|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment|accessdate=2008-06-02] Regal stated that if Orton and JBL won, they could choose any kind of extreme rematches against Triple H and Cena at One Night Stand and if Triple H and Cena won, they would face each other for the WWE Championship in an extreme match of Regal's choosing. Orton and JBL won the match. Orton chose a match in which the wrestler who was unable to respond to a ten count by the referee would lose against Triple H. JBL chose a First Blood match, a match in which to win a wrestler has to make his opponent bleed, against Cena. At One Night Stand, both men lost in their rematches.cite web|first=Craig|last=Tello|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/onenightstand/matches/7117536/results/|accessdate=2008-06-01|title=Champion stands his ground|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment|date=2008-06-01] cite web|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/onenightstand/matches/7117514/results/|accessdate=2008-06-01|title=Longhorn's Bloody Loudmouth|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment|last=Sitterson|first=Aubrey|date=2008-06-01] Orton, however, legitimately broke his collarbone during his match with Triple H. The staged rivalry between The Undertaker and Edge continued. On the May 23 edition of "SmackDown", authority figure Vickie Guerrero announced that The Undertaker would face Edge for the vacant World Heavyweight Championship in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match (TLC) at One Night Stand with the stipulation that if Undertaker lost, he would be forced to leave the WWE.cite web|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/smackdown/archive/05232008/articles/deadmanslaststand|title=Deadman's last stand|first=Mitch|last=Passero|date=2008-05-23|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment|accessdate=2008-06-02] [cite web|first=Lennie|last=DiFino|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/smackdown/archive/05232008/|title=Stood up|accessdate=2008-08-28|date=2008-05-23|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment] At One Night Stand, Edge defeated Undertaker with the help of Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder in a TLC match to win the vacant World Heavyweight Championship and Undertaker was forced to leave WWE.cite web|first=Lennie|last=DiFino|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/onenightstand/matches/edgevsundertakertlcmatch/results/|title=TLC RIP|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment|date=2008-06-01] At One Night Stand, The Big Show (Paul Wight) defeated CM Punk, Chavo Guerrero (Salvador Guerrero III), Tommy Dreamer (Thomas Laughlin) and John Morrison in a five-man Singapore Cane match to earn an ECW Championship match against Kane at Night of Champions.cite web|url=http://www.wwe.com/shows/onenightstand/matches/7125736/results/|title=Blood big showing|last=Passero|first=Mitch|date=2008-06-01|publisher=World Wrestling Entertainment|accessdate=2008-06-01]
