Shunting inhibition

Shunting inhibition

Shunting inhibition is a type of gain control mechanism theorized to regulate the responses of neurons. [cite book |title=The Physiology of Synapses |author=Eccles, JC |year=1964 |publisher=Springer-Verlag |location=Berlin |isbn= |pages= |url= ] [cite journal |author=Blomfield S |title=Arithmetical operations performed by nerve cells |journal=Brain Res. |volume=69 |issue=1 |pages=115–24 |year=1974 |month=Mar |pmid=4817903 |doi= |url=http://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/0006-8993(74)90375-8] . Simple inhibition such as hyperpolarization has a subtractive effect on the depolarization caused by concurrent excitation, whereas shunting inhibition has a divisive effect.
