Montreal ,Quebec , he started out in politics in1968 when he became a city councillor inL'Île-Bizard, Quebec . He was elected mayor in1969 and served as mayor until1987 at that point, he attempted a run at federal politics, running in theCanadian federal election, 1988 for theLiberal Party of Canada in the riding ofPierrefonds—Dollard . He lost, but a second attempt in theCanadian federal election, 1993 was successful. He was subsequently re-elected in 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2006. A physician, he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development from 1996 to 1998. He is currently the chair of Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade as well as the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade.Patry's Stance on the Issues
