Alan J. Steinberg

Alan J. Steinberg (born November 22, 1949) is the current Regional Administrator for the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) [http://www.epa.gov/region02 Region 2] . He was sworn to his position on September 7, 2005. Region 2 serves New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and seven federally recognized Indian Nations. Mr. Steinberg oversees federal programs that govern all aspects of the environment with the purpose of protecting the health and livelihood of the region's approximately 31 million residents.

Mr. Steinberg received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, his J.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School and a Master of Laws in Taxation from Temple University Beasley School of Law.

As Regional Administrator, Mr. Steinberg manages nearly 1,000 staff from a variety of professions - engineering, hydro geology, law, chemistry, biology and public outreach, to name just a few. He also oversees an annual budget of approximately $750 million. Among his priorities as Regional Administrator are the cleanups of the [http://www.epa.gov/hudson/ Hudson] and [http://epa.gov/region02/passaicriver/ Passaic] rivers and [http://www.epa.gov/region02/water/lakes/onondaga.htm Lake Onondaga] , approving the State Clean Air Implementation Plans for [http://www.epa.gov/region02/air/sip/ New York] and [http://www.epa.gov/region02/air/sip/ New Jersey] , and improving [http://www.epa.gov/region02/cepd/solidwaste_in_puerto_rico.html solid waste management in Puerto Rico] . These goals represent the imperatives of his tenure, while EPA Region 2 will continue to pursue success in all of its duties and remain true to its original principles: protecting the air, land and water of the region.

Prior to his EPA appointment, Steinberg was Regional Advocate, Region 2, for the federal government's Small Business Administration. He served as the Executive Director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, was a member of the [http://www.state.nj.us/commerce/ New Jersey Executive Commission on Ethical Standards] , worked for the New Jersey Department of Commerce and Economic Development as an Assistant Commissioner, and acted as Senior Policy Advisor in the [http://www.assemblydems.com/ New Jersey Assembly Majority Office] .

He worked as legal counsel for a number of corporations including Stage II Apparel, Gruen Marketing Corporation, Russ Berrie and Company and Block Drug. He began his legal career in the U.S. Navy, serving as a lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General's Corps.
