San Jose State Spartans football

The San Jose State Spartans team represents San Jose State University and the Silicon Valley in NCAA Division I FBS college football. The current head coach is Dick Tomey, who began his tenure in 2005.

History

The SJSU Spartan football team competes in Division I Bowl Subdivision, and is part of the Western Athletic Conference or WAC.

SJSU first fielded a football team in 1893cite news | url=http://www.mercurynews.com/sjsu150/ci_5779138 | title=All about perseverance | author=Laurence Miedema | work=San Jose Mercury News | date=April 29, 2007 | accessdate=2007-09-30 ] and has won 16 conference championships, the first being in 1932.

The first regular football seasons began in 1898 and were mostly against local high schools and some colleges and junior colleges. During the 1930s and 1940s the Spartan football program was considered a power house winning 8 conference championships over an 18 year span. The 1939 team went 13—0, the only undefeated season in the school's history.

The 1941 team was on Oʻahu during the attack on Pearl Harbor to play a series of post-season games against the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors and Willamette University Bearcats. After the attack, the team was stranded in Hawai'i for a number of weeks and was employed to improve island defenses against a Japanese amphibious assault and as guards for military bases on the island.

In 2004, San Jose State defeated the Rice Owls 70—63 in a game that set the NCAA Division I record for total points scored and total touchdowns for a non-overtime game. The Spartans finished the season 2-9.

San Jose State's Spartan Stadium was completed in 1933 with a capacity of 18,000. The Spartans won the first football game played in the stadium, 44-6, over San Francisco State on October 7, 1933. Two stadium expansions and renovations in the 1980s increased the seating capacity from 18,000 to 30,456.

2006

In 2006, the Spartans made it to the 2006 New Mexico Bowl, in which they defeated New Mexico State 20-12. This was their first bowl game appearance and win since 1990
