- Steven Clarke
Steven G. Clarke, PhD, an American
biochemist , is a director of [http://dgsom.healthsciences.ucla.edu/institution/groups-detail?group%5fid=78428 UCLA Molecular Biology Institute] , a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UCLA biochemistry department. Dr. Clarke heads a laboratory at UCLA's department of chemistry and biochemistry. Dr. Clarke is famous for his work on molecular damage and discoveries of novelmolecular repair mechanisms.Dr. Steven Clarke has been on the faculty of the
UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since 1978. He is currently a Professor of Biochemistry and Director of theUCLA Molecular Biology Institute . He was born inLos Angeles and attended public schools inAltadena andPasadena , California. He did his undergraduate work atPomona College in Claremont, majoring in Chemistry and Zoology. During this time, he did undergraduate research at theUCLA Brain Research Institute with Dr.James E. Skinner and ProfessorDonald Lindsley onneural mechanisms of attention . He was also anNIH fellow in the laboratory of Dr.Peter Mitchell atGlynn Research Laboratories in Bodmin, England studying mitochondrial amino acid transport. He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology atHarvard University working as anNSF Fellow with ProfessorGuido Guidotti on membrane protein-detergent interactions and the identification of the major rat liver mitochondrial polypeptides as enzymes of the urea cycle. He returned to California to do postdoctoral work as aMiller Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, with ProfessorDan Koshland , identifying membrane receptors for bacterial chemotaxis.Dr. Clarke's research at UCLA has focused on roles of novel
protein methyltransferases in aging andbiological regulation highlighted by discoveries of the proteinL-isoaspartyl repairmethyltransferase , theisoprenylcysteine protein methyltransferase, and theprotein phosphatase 2A methyltransferase. He has been a visiting scholar atPrinceton University (1986-87) and at theUniversity of Washington (2004-2005).External links
