George D'Oyly Snow

George D’Oyly Snow (1903 - 1977) was a career school master who later served for a decade as the fifth Bishop of Whitby [The Times, Thursday, Oct 19, 1961; pg. 14; Issue 55216; col D "Ecclesiastical News Consecration Of Two Bishops At York"] . Educated at Winchester College and Oriel College, Oxford [ "The Right Rev George Snow Former Suffragan Bishop of Whitby" (Obituaries)The Times Monday, Nov 21, 1977; pg. 17; Issue 60166; col F] , he then became an assistant master at Eton College (towards the end of which time he was ordained) [Crockford's clerical directory,(London, Church House 1995) ISBN 0715180886] . After Eton he became Chaplain of Charterhouse School, and then Headmaster of Ardingly College (1947-1961).

He was appointed Prebendary of Chichester Cathedral in 1959 [”Who was Who 1897-1990” London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] before elevation to the Episcopate two years later. A tall man [The Times, Thursday, Apr 03, 1969; pg. VI; Issue 57526; col A "Fun for a 6ft. bishop"] and prolific author [Amongst others he wrote "A Guide to Prayer" (1932) , "A School Service Book" (1936), "Into His Presence" (1946) "The Public School in the New Age" (1959) and "Forth in His Name" (1964) Who’s Who (Ibid)] he continued in retirement to Chair the "National Society".

He was the son of First World War General Thomas D'Oyly Snow, father of Channel 4 newscaster Jon Snow, uncle of television presenter Peter Snow, and great-uncle to television presenter Dan Snow.
