Episcopal Day School (Pensacola, Florida)

Episcopal Day School (EDS) was founded originally in 1856 as a part of Old Christ Church. It has been opened non-stop since 1952. It offers an outstanding education with a curriculum focused on comprehensive instruction in the areas of language-arts, mathematics, science, Christian education, foreign language, technology education, and the arts. As it is a Christian school, Christian education is taught as a class and the students will attend chapel every Wednesday.

Mission

The mission of EDS is to offer an outstanding education in a Christian environment. The faculty is dedicated to teaching students and allowing them to learn at their full capacity. With all of the excellent teachers and staff that do more than enough to help their students and the nice, Christian environment, Episcopal Day School has carried out and continues to carry out its mission throughout the years.

Chapel

Every Wednesday, grades Kindergarten-8 and all teachers gathers for chapel. The fourth grade makes up the choir that sings hymns, the six and seventh grades do the readings, and the eighth grade acolytes. Pre-k 3 and 4 have their own service after devotions on Monday morning. It is known as the Wee Worship Service and is lead by Mrs. Boyden, the Christian Education teacher.

Curriculum

The curriculum consists of main and enrichment classes. Science, Math, History, and English are categorized as the main classes. The enrichment classes include Art, Christian Education, Physical Education, Spanish Language, Library, Music, and Technology Education. However, music is a class for lower school only.

Faculty and Staff

There are eight members on the administration, four staff members in the office, 32 teachers, nine enrichment teachers, and 1 clergy.

Grades

There are three programs offered at EDS, Preschool, Lower School and Upper School. Preschool offers PreK-3 and Prek-4, while Lower school offers Kindergarten through 4th grade. Upper school is consisted of 5th-8th grade. A High school is under development.

The Eighth Grade

The eighth grade is the very last year, so certain privileges are given to them that younger students do not have. They are also given a retreat near the beginning of the year and a trip at the end of the year to celebrate graduating EDS and to gather as an entire group one last time. Although many privileges have gone away over time, they still sit in chairs rather than the floor at Devotions. The eighth grade operates the meal deal and they serve as acolytes for chapels services.

Uniforms

All students of EDS are required to wear uniforms. For shirts, there are choices between white, maroon, and yellow polos. They must be monogrammed. Boys may wear khaki pants or shorts, and girls may wear a plaid or khaki skirt. A separate uniform is worn on chapel day and on field trips.The upper schools chapel uniform consist of a white oxford shirt for boys and girls and a khaki shorts or pants for boys and a plaid skirt for girls. For lower school the chapel uniform is the same except they were white polos instead of oxfords.

ports

There are sports in which students can participate. These sports include: basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Basketball is offered for most grades with separate teams for boys and girls. Volleyball is offered for only seventh and eight grades. There is a tennis team that is organized by age groups and levels of play. Football with Little Flower is offered to upper school students.

Accreditation

Episcopal Day School is accredited by the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS). They were tested for accreditation in the 2006-2007 school year.
