Iqa'

Iqa'

"Iqa'" (Arabic: إيقاع; plural "iqa'at", إيقاعات) are rhythmic modes or rhythmic patterns used in Arabic music. [http://books.google.com/books?id=612I67dSzPkC&pg=PA201&dq=iqa%27+rhythmic&sig=W6DdFcD6B0la_GVqZR7plu-96EU] The greatest variety of "iqa"' (ranging from two to 48 beats) are used in the "muwashshah" of Arabic classical music. There are reputed to be over 100 "iqa"', [http://books.google.com/books?id=GU8yAAAAMAAJ&q=iqa'+%22over+100%22&dq=iqa'+%22over+100%22&pgis=1] but many of them have fallen out of fashion and are rarely if ever used in performance.

In Ottoman classical music, the corresponding term is "usul".
