Angarsk

Angarsk ( _ru. Анга́рск) is a city in Irkutsk Oblast, South-East Siberia, Russia. It lies on the Angara River, at coord|52|34|N|103|49|E|region:RU_type:city(247,118). The distance to Moscow is 5,150 km.

Angarsk was founded in 1948 as an industrial community and became a city on May 30, 1951. Angarsk has the largest industrial zone in Asia. It includes Angarsk Petrochemical Complex and Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Complex. The city is home to the Angarsk Museum of Clocks and Watches, the Angarsk Museum of Victory, and the Angarsk State Technical Academy. Angarsk also hosts a showcase international nuclear fuel cycle centre, which will be one of the first Russian enrichment centres to be placed under IAEA safeguards.

Population: 262,300 (2004 est.); 247,118 (2002 Census).

In 2005, Angarsk won first prize in a nation-wide contest for the best pace of development of communal services.

The city is connected by the Trans-Siberian Railway. The Angarsk Tram, Bus and jitney provides public transport in the city.

Local Government

As a result of the elections of December 2, 2007, Leonid G. Mikhailov was elected mayor. Previous to that (elections of October 9, 2005), Eugene P. Kanuhin was mayor.
