Sierra Leonean presidential election, 1985

A referendum to confirm the presidential candidate Joseph Saidu Momoh was held in Sierra Leone on 1 October 1985. [ [http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/5475.htm Background Note: Sierra Leone] US Department of State] As the country was a single-party state under the All People's Congress at the time, only one candidate was allowed, and therefore a referendum to approve the sole candidate was carried out in place of an election. It was the country's first direct vote for president. [ [http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A0DE0D91239F931A35753C1A963948260 Sierra Leone Election] New York Times, 2 October 1985]
