South Euclid is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is an inner-ring suburb of Cleveland that slightly borders the city on its southeastern side. The population was 23,537 at the 2000 Census.

South Euclid became a village on October 13, 1917, and was officially incorporated as a city in 1941.

Geography

South Euclid is located at coor dms|41|31|19|N|81|31|40|W|city (41.522071, -81.527677).GR|1 Acting almost as a central point for the east side of Cleveland, South Euclid is bordered by Cleveland, East Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, University Heights, Beachwood, Lyndhurst, Richmond Heights, and Euclid.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.7 sq mi (12.1 km²), all land.

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 23,537 people, 9,542 households, and 6,421 families residing in the city. The population density was 5,019.2 people per square mile (1,937.7/km²). There were 9,854 housing units at an average density of 2,101.3/sq mi (811.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 75.24% White, 21.38% African American, 0.10% Native American, 1.50% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.

Like Cleveland Heights to the west and University Heights to the south, South Euclid is racially integrated. A large portion of the city's population consists of Italian-Americans, Jews, and immigrants from Russia and other former Soviet republics.

There were 9,542 households out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% were married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 85.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $48,346, and the median income for a family was $58,958. Males had a median income of $41,125 versus $31,693 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,383. About 2.8% of families and 4.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.4% of those under age 18 and 4.9% of those age 65 or over.

Education

*The South Euclid-Lyndhurst City School District consists of 3 elementary schools: Adrian, Rowland, and Sunview; 1 upper elementary school (grades 5-6): Greenview; 1 (Grades 7-8): junior high school: Memorial; and 1 high school, Charles F. Brush. Southlyn Elementary is now used for a preschool program and community room.

*There are two parochial elementary schools in South Euclid: St. Gregory the Great (Roman Catholic), and St. John's (Lutheran).

*Regina High School is a parochial high school for girls, located in South Euclid. Regina's basketball team was the Ohio State Girl's Basketball Champions from 2000-03, and also took the title in 2005. [http://www.reginahigh.com/Basketball.html]

Former Schools:

*Andrew J Anderson (Elementary): Built in the 1950s as a public school. In the 1980s, it was leased to Ratner-Montessouri private schools. The building was torn down in 2007 and the land is currently being used as an athletic field.

*Victory Road School (Elementary): located on the corner of VictoryDrive and Mayfield Road where Giant Eagle Supermarket is now located.

*Green Road School (High School): located in the current Maymore shopping Plaza.

*Lowden Elementary: Lowden was Kindergarden through sixth grade from 1956 - 1989. The school opened September 9th 1954 and closed June 8th 2007 due to school consolidation. The building is vacant at 4106 Lowden Road. The South Euclid-Lyndhurst City School District plans to demolish the building and sell the land to a developer for housing.

*Southlyn Elementary is now used for a preschool program and community room.

Developments

*Cedar Center's final remaining tenants vacated in May 2008 to allow for the entire shopping center to be demolished later this year to make way for multi-level mixed-use retail, residential, office, and public green space including a large clock tower. The project is being executed by Coral Company, which recently completed the other side of Cedar Center in University Heights, across the street. *A large parcel of land on Cedar Road, between Warrensville Center and South Belvoir was recently sold to a private developer and the land has been zoned for dense residential. The parcel of land sits directly across the street from the 5-story University Center. South Euclid's zoning board wants to make sure the land is used effectively.fact|date=June 2008

*Robert Maschke Architects is proposing a new futuristic home on South Belvoir Blvd., tentatively titled, The Tanruther Residence. The 6 level home wouldn't be the first time a significant Cleveland architect built a home on South Belvoir. Just several houses down from the proposed Tanruther Residence stands Fleischman & Associates 8 level home that Robert Fleischman himself lived in when it was originally built in 1966.fact|date=June 2008

Famous natives

*Eric Carmen - Musician/Music Producer. Attended Brush High School (Class of 1967), Founded The Raspberries. Probably best known for his Top 40 hit song "Hungry Eyes", which appears on the soundtrack to the 1987 motion picture "Dirty Dancing".

*Steve Stone - former MLB pitcher and broadcaster for the Chicago Cubs. The 1980 American League Cy Young Award winner grew up in South Euclid. Stone spent his prep years pitching at Charles F. Brush High School in neighboring Lyndhurst.

*David S. Ward - screenwriter and director, lived in South Euclid as a youth, most famous for "The Sting" in 1973, and "Major League" in 1989. Ward wrote the latter film as a tribute to his favorite childhood baseball team, the Cleveland Indians.

*Joe Posnanski - award-winning sports columnist for the Kansas City Star.
