Butner is a town in Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,792 at the 2000 census. Butner was managed by the state of North Carolina from 1947 through 2007. A bill passed by the North Carolina General Assembly incorporating the town was signed by Gov. Mike Easley on July 27, 2007. It is the former site of the U.S. Army's Camp Butner, which was named for Major General Henry W. Butner (1875-1937), a North Carolina native. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.6 square miles (17.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 5,792 people, 1,438 households, and 1,009 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 873.4 people per square mile (337.3/km²). There were 1,489 housing units at an average density of 224.5/sq mi (86.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 48.58% White, 45.27% African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 3.35% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.56% of the population.

There were 1,438 households out of which 35.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.1% were married couples living together, 21.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 18.8% under the age of 18, 19.7% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 138.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 144.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $40,341, and the median income for a family was $46,348. Males had a median income of $32,974 versus $23,565 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $15,174. About 2.0% of families and 5.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 5.6% of those age 65 or over.
