The Mortality Bill for the year 1665, published by the Parish Clerk’s Company, shows 97 parishes within the City of London. [ The "Churches of the City of London" Reynolds,H: London, Bodley Head, 1922] By 1670 a Rebuilding Act had been passed and a committee set up under the stewardship of Sir Christopher Wren to decide which would be rebuilt. [ "Wren" Whinney,M London Thames & Hudson, 1971 ISBN 0500201129] Fifty-one were chosen, but St Gabriel Fenchurch in Langbourn Ward [ [http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=36031 Location described] ] was one of the unlucky minority never to be rebuilt. [ "The City of London Churches" Betjeman, J. Andover, Pitkin, 1967 (rpnt 1992) ISBN 0853725659 ] The church was situated in the "MIDDLE" of Fenchurch Street, ["A Dictionary of London" Harben, H.: London, Herbert Jenkins, 1918] an inconvenient arrangement [ [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mysouthernfamily/myff/d0064/g0000064.html Pre Great Fire Burial] ] even for the higgledy-piggledy street patterns of the overcrowded "Square Mile". [Samuel Pepys comments after visit on 9 April 1665 “Diary”: Dover, Lewis Publications,1992 ISBN 048636675] Stow [”A survey of London” Stow,J A (W.Thoms,Ed): London, A Whittaker & Co,1842- rev of 1598 book ] says the church, first mentioned in 1321, took its name from the marshy ground on which it was built while Huelin [”Vanished Churches of the City of London” Huelin,G London Guildhall Library Publishing 1996 ISBN 0900422424] asserts it derives from a mispronunciation of the Latin for the hay market in nearby Gracechurch Street. A prosperous parish [ [http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=32010 Residents listed] ] it received three new bells in 1552 [ [http://london.lovesguide.com/gabriel_fenchurch.htm 1552 "iij bells"] ] and was “beautified” in 1631. [ “The City of London-a history” Borer,M.I.C. : New York,D.McKay Co, 1978 ISBN 0094618801] Following the fire it was united to St Margaret Pattens [ [http://www.manfamily.org/Henry_Man1748_1799.htm Two separate entities preserved] ] although its land holding was not finally resolved until 13 years later. ["Deeds and documents concerning nos. 143-149 Fenchurch Street (north side) 1679." - v185779x cited in City of London Parish Registers Guide 4 Hallows,A.(Ed) : London, Guildhall Library Research, 1974 ISBN 0900422300 ] Charitable bequests continued to be made using the old name [ [http://books.google.com/books?id=Y-IHAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA321&lpg=PA321&dq=st+gabriel+fenchurch&source=web&ots=WaHx4jzUA-&sig=QzsaauPQlemfpgUb__awGnA45f8 The Endowed Charities of the City of London,1829] ] and partial records still survive at IGI. [ [http://www.gendocs.demon.co.uk/city-ch.html Genealogical Web-Site] ] .
