Irthington

Irthington is a civil parish within the Carlisle district in Cumbria, England. Located in the far north of Cumberland this locale is crossed by Hadrian's Wall and is anteceded by the Roman settlement comprising Britannia. This parish is circumscribed by the parishes of Crosby, Scaleby, Kirklinton, Hayton, Brampton and Walton. [ [http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CUL/Irthington/index.html Irthington, Cumberland] ] Irthington derives its name from the River Irthing.

For Hadrian's Wall in the west of England, originally "turf and timber were preferred on the Solway Plain, where stone is scarce", according to C.Michael Hogan. [ [http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=18177 C.Michael Hogan (2007) "Hadrian's Wall", ed. A. Burnham, The Megalithic Portal] ] At later dates stone was used to supplement these earlier constructions. Some of the building stone from the south wall of Irthington Chancel derived from re-use of stones from Hadrian's Wall.
