Wadesboro is a town in Anson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,552 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Anson CountyGR|6.

Geography

Wadesboro is located at coor dms|34|58|5|N|80|4|17|W|city (34.968096, -80.071488)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.0 square miles (7.7 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,552 people, 1,393 households, and 930 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,194.2 people per square mile (461.8/km²). There were 1,585 housing units at an average density of 532.9/sq mi (206.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 41.69% White, 56.36% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 0.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.30% of the population.

There were 1,393 households out of which 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.7% were married couples living together, 27.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 75.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 70.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $23,302, and the median income for a family was $29,514. Males had a median income of $25,043 versus $20,774 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,500. About 23.0% of families and 25.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.2% of those under age 18 and 20.3% of those age 65 or over.
