American Association of Neurological Surgeons

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is a professional body based in the USA with more than 7,200 members worldwide. [ [http://www.aans.org/about/ AANS.org | About AANS ] ] The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to the public. All active members of the AANS are certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Neurosurgery) of Canada or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, AC. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the entire nervous system, including the spinal column, spinal cord, brain, and peripheral nerves.

The AANS was founded in 1931 as the "Harvey Cushing Society", and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2007, culminating at the AANS 75th Annual Meeting – "Celebrating AANS’ Diamond Jubilee in Washington". Annual Scientific Meetings

AANS Annual Scientific Meetings are the largest gatherings of neurosurgeons in the nation, focusing on the latest research and technological advances in the field. Medical attendees choose from a wide array of top-notch education and science presented by renowned neurosurgeons from around the world. Annual Scientific Meetings present a unique opportunity for neurosurgeons to attain a significant portion of their CME credit requirements through the scientific programming as well as a plethora of breakfast seminars and practical clinics.

Member Education

Educating members is the top strategic priority of the AANS. Every year, the AANS offers its members a wide array of courses, covering practice management, oral board preparation, and resident education. Complementing the regular curriculum of on-site courses, the AANS offers innovative online vehicles to obtain CME. This is in addition to the CME credits offered at AANS annual meetings.

The AANS supports the highest level of professional excellence through the American Board of Neurological Surgery’s (ABNS) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. While consistently providing exceptional educational programs as part of the CME aspects of recertification, the AANS also offers the ABNS MOC online application tool and data collection activities.

Patient Education/Outreach

The AANS does not refer patients to specific neurosurgeons or hospitals, nor provides medical advice about specific treatments or procedures. However, the Find A Board-Certified Neurosurgeon online service can help you locate a physician in your area. [ [http://www.neurosurgerytoday.org/findaneuro/ NeurosurgeryToday.org | Find a Board-Certified Neurosurgeon ] ]

The AANS provides the public with a wide range of neurosurgical patient health information via its public Web site. [ http://www.NeurosurgeryToday.org.] This site is is a one-stop shop for detailed information on a wide variety of neurological conditions and diseases. The most up-to-date information is provided on a wide range of neurosurgical conditions and diseases. These topics run the gamut from A to Z -- from adult onset hydrocephalus to lumbar spinal stenosis to trigeminal neuralgia. There are also downloadable color fact sheets available on an array of patient safety/injury prevention topics.

Member Benefits

In order to diversify revenue sources and reduce reliance on member dues, the AANS develops and produces services to its members. AANS identifies its membership’s needs in an ongoing system of assessment and evaluation. To most precisely address those needs, the AANS occasionally evaluates and selects outside partners to offer programs that can help members personally or professionally.

Neurosurgical Research

The Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF) was created in 1981 as a response to the alarming decline in federal and private funding for medical research. Since the NREF awarded its first grant in 1983, a steady increase in support has led to the granting of 127 awards. The vast majority of the residents and young clinicians/researchers who have received NREF grants, continue to contribute significantly to neurosurgical research in their professional careers. More information on this program including a yearbook of grantees is available on the Web. [ [http://www.aans.org/research/ AANS.org | Research ] ]

Socioeconomic Publication

The official socioeconomic publication of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, "AANS Neurosurgeon" (formerly the "AANS Bulletin") features information and analysis for contemporary neurosurgical practice. "AANS Neurosurgeon" focuses on issues related to legislation, workforce and practice management as they affect the specialty of neurosurgery.
