Mashhad (Hebrew: מַשְׁהַד‎‎, Arabic: مشهد‎, Mash-hed transliteration, grave of a holy man) is an Arab town located 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) northeast of Nazareth in Israel's North District. According to the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics, the town had a population of 6,700 mostly Muslim inhabitants.[1][2]

Mashhad became a local council in 1960. The town is said to be the site of Jonah's grave [2] and his birthplace (2 Kings 14:25), called Gath-Hefer in Biblical times, a village in the tribe of Zebulun (Joshua 19:13).
