Cannanore Cantonment

The Cannanore Cantonment was established in the 19th century by the British at Kannur, a town in Kerala state, south India. Cantonments were established during the British era usually in their military areas where both civilian and military personnel resided.The cantonment was brought under the control of the Arakkal Kingdom until 1909, when the "Arakkal Beevi", Rani Imbichi Adi-Raja Bibi lost it to the British.

The Cannanore Cantonment is located between Kannur town and Kannur City. The St. Angelo Fort is part of the Cannanore Cantonment. After the Indian Independence, the Cannanore Cantonment came under the control of the Indian Army. Today, the Cannanore Cantonment is a prominent and strategic location for the Indian armed forces.

Cannannore is the old English name for Kannur. However, the Cantonment is still often referred to as Cannanore Cantonment. The Cannanore Cantonment Board is one of the 62 cantonments in India and the only one in Kerala. The Cantonment at Kannur falls in the Class II category.

The cantonment is the headquarters of Defence Security Corps, the place is also known as Burnassery, a place where most Anglo Indians stay. There are many churches, a mosque and a famous Hindu temple in the cantonment area. St Therasa's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School and St. Michael's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School are two famous Anglo Indian Schools that are located in and around the Cantonment.

Cannanore Cantonment Board

The Cannanore Cantonment Board came into existence in 1938. This cantonment constitutes of 2698 civilians and 2121 military population. The Board consists of 8 members. Four of them are elected from the civilian population. The Officer-in-Command is the chairman of the Board.
