Sahebganj (also spelt as Sahibganj) is the district headquarters of Sahebganj district of Jharkhand state, India.

Sahebganj means a place (ganj) of masters (sahebs or sahibs). The place is likely to have gotten its name because a number of English and other European people lived and worked in and around the railway station during the British Raj. Nevertheless, the district has remained inhabitated by tribal people since time immemorial. The town is cosmopolition with people from Bihar, Bengal, Jharkhand and refugees from Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Geography

Sahebganj is located at coord|25.25|N|87.65|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/38/Sahibganj.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Sahibganj] ] . It has an average elevation of 16 metres (52 feet).

Sahebganj is a very small town, lost between the Rajmahal Hills and the Ganges, cut off from rest of the state due to bad roads and under developed road link. It is a town build on a strip of land running between the Ganga river (only place in Jharkhand to have the Ganges) and the green Rajmahal hills. The Government including the Railways is the biggest employer and there are no major industries in the district.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Sahebganj had a population of 80,129. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Sahibganj has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 55%. In Sahibganj, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Education

It has a very good Jesuit school called St. Xavier's and a good college called Sahibganj College. The alumnus of St. Xavier's School, Sahebganj are spread all over India and in different places around the globe. The leader, Adam Attaar, has stressed about education in his land.
