Belton is a city in Cass County, Missouri, near Kansas City. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population of 21,730.

Geography

Belton is at coor dms|38|49|6|N|94|31|47|W|city (38.818232, -94.529838)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.4 square miles (34.8 km²), of which, 13.4 square miles (34.7 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.30%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 21,730 people, 7,945 households, and 5,807 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,622.2 people per square mile (626.1/km²). There were 8,411 housing units at an average density of 627.9/sq mi (242.4/km²).

Racial makeup

The racial makeup of the city was 92.98% White, 2.86% Black, 0.59% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.07% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.68% of the population.

Households

There are 7,945 households, out of which 40.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.9% were non-families. 22.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.15.

The population is spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males.

Income

The median income for a household in the city was $45,581, and the median income for a family was $51,268. Males had a median income of $35,518 versus $25,542 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,572. About 6.5% of families and 7.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.5% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.
