It was formed in
1948 followingPakistan 's independence from theBritish Empire . As part of the agreement, theMuslim population were given their own state ofPakistan , made up ofWest Pakistan andEast Pakistan . The infantry of the newPakistan Army was made up exclusively of men from the main, west part of the country. As a consequence, it was necessary to raise a regiment in the east; so two companies ofBengal i pioneers from theBihar Regiment were regimented into the1st Battalion , East Bengal Regiment under Lt. Col. Patterson as C.O. and MajorAbdul Waheed Choudhury O.C. training coy., with the 2nd Battalion being formed soon after. Between1948 and1971 , a total of eight battalions were raised, with the 5th, 6th and 7th inWest Pakistan .In March
1971 , in response to a crackdown on locals in East Pakistan, the five battalions of the East Bengal Regiment mutinied and initiated theBangladesh War of Liberation . The East Bengal Regiment formed the core of the liberation forces, which became known as theMukti Bahini . Further units were raised to replace those that remained stranded in West Pakistan. Following the foundation ofBangladesh , these units formed the core of the new army. However, the 7th Battalion was incorporated as 44th Battalion,Frontier Force Regiment in thePakistan Army , which led to the raising of the 10th Battalion in1971 .Today The East Bengal Regiment, is proudly moving forward with around 50 battalions, playing the key role in safeguarding the sovereignty of the Country. The Queen of the Battle is also supporting the Government under 'in aid of civil power' for all such duties the Government is calling for.
Role
The East Bengal Regiment is the largest formation of the army, with battalions in each of the fifteen infantry
brigades . It's typical role is to close with and destroy the enemy. The regiment also provides to Bangladesh'speacekeeping commitments overseas, as Bangladesh is one of the largest troops contributing country at theUN .*See Also
