Winsted is a city in McLeod County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,094 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.5 km²), all of it land. County Highways 1 and 6 are two of the main routes in the community.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,094 people, 822 households, and 535 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,549.9 people per square mile (598.9/km²). There were 847 housing units at an average density of 626.9/sq mi (242.2/km²).

The racial makeup of the city was 98.42% White, 0.19% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.62% of the population.

There were 822 households out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. The percentage of all households which were made up of individuals was 28.5% and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $41,588, and the median income for a family was $50,272. Males had a median income of $32,929 versus $23,571 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,896. About 3.2% of families and 5.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.8% of those under age 18 and 8.4% of those age 65 or over.

Education

There are two school systems in Winsted. The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted school district [ [http://www.hlww.k12.mn.us HL-W-W District Home Page] ] is the public school system which operates Winsted Elementary. The Catholic school system is made up of Holy Trinity High School, Holy Trinity Elementary School, and Tiny Trojans pre-school [ [http://www.winstedholytrinity.org Holy Trinity - Holy Trinity's Home Page ] ] .

Entertainment

Winsted has both a winter and summer town festival. The "Winsted Winter Festival" features a lighted parade as well as various other activities. The "Winsted Summer Festival" features a parade, street dance, a sand volleyball tournament, and various other activities. Winsted is also home to Winstock Country Music Festival.
