Ayat al kursi

Ayat al kursi

Refers to the 255th verse of the second chapter of the Quran "Surah Al-Baqarah".

Etymology

While not all verses in the Quran carry a specific name, this one was given the name 'Ayat Al-Kursi' (meaning verse of the chair and other meaning footstool) to emphasize its importance. See 'Virtues of Reciting Ayat-Al-Kursi' below. Briefly, anyone who [http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/recite recites] the verse enters the protection and security of Allah. More commonly it is recited before one goes to sleep. It rids the reciter's house from demons and protects the reciter's house, family and self.

Translation

It is translated as follows:

"Allah! There is no god but He - the Living, The Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him Nor Sleep. His are all things In the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede In His presence except As he permitteth? He knoweth What (appeareth to His creatures As) Before or After or Behind them. Nor shall they compass Aught of his knowledge Except as He willeth. His throne doth extend Over the heavens And on earth, and He feeleth No fatigue in guarding And preserving them, For He is the Most High, The Supreme (in glory)." [Surah al-Baqarah 2: 255]

The Arabic Phonetics are:"Allahu la ilaha illa huwa, Al -Haiyul-Qaiyum La ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm lahu ma fi as-samawati wa ma fil-'ard Man dhal-ladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnihi Ya'lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum wa la yuhituna bi shai'in min 'ilmihi illa bima sha'a Wasi'a kursiyuhus-samawati wal ard wa la ya'uduhu hifdhuhuma wa Hu wal 'Aliyul-Adheem"

Virtues of Reciting Ayat-Al-Kursi

Ubayy bin Ka'b (Also known as Abu Mundhir) stated: "Muhammed said to me: "Abu Mundhir! Do you know which Ayah in Allah's Book is the greatest? I replied: "Allah and His messenger know best."

To which Muhammed replied: 'Do you know which Ayah in Allah's Book, according to you, is the greatest? I replied: "It is "Allah la ilaha illa huwal-hayyul-qayyum".Thereupon he patted me in the chest and said, ' Rejoice by your knowledge, O' Abu Mundhir!"
