Vintry is a ward of the City of London, the ward lies within the boundary formed by Queen Victoria Street, Cannon Street, Queenhithe (named for the former "Queens Hythe", or dock) and Cousin Lane [The City of London-a history Borer,M.I.C. : New York,D.McKay Co, 1978 ISBN 0094618801] .The ward houses the Vintners Hall, a Livery Company, is situated by Southwark Bridge, and the Wren church of St James Garlickhythe is near to Mansion House tube station. In mediaeval times, French wine and garlic were landed at the nearby "Garlickhythe", this lead to the church being part of the pilgrimage route to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela [A survey of London Stow,J A (W.Thoms,Ed): London, A Whittaker & Co,1842- rev of 1598 book] .
