Livermore is a town in Androscoggin County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,106 at the 2000 census. It is included in both the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine Metropolitan New England City and Town Area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.4 square miles (102.0 km²), of which, 37.7 square miles (97.6 km²) of it is land and 1.7 square miles (4.4 km²) of it (4.34%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,106 people, 842 households, and 602 families residing in the town. The population density was 55.9 people per square mile (21.6/km²). There were 1,066 housing units at an average density of 28.3/sq mi (10.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.00% White, 0.24% African American, 0.05% Native American, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population.

There were 842 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 23.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 111.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $38,850, and the median income for a family was $44,904. Males had a median income of $32,898 versus $25,208 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,706. About 2.0% of families and 5.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.3% of those under age 18 and 2.8% of those age 65 or over.

Livermore is the birthplace of the seven sons of Israel Washburn, Sr., five of whom went on to achieve a degree of distinction in national politics:

* Israel Washburn, Jr. (1813-1883) - Member of Maine state house of representatives, 1842; U.S. Representative from Maine, 1851-61 (6th District 1851-53, 5th District 1853-61); Governor of Maine, 1861-63.
* Elihu B. Washburne (1816-1887) - U.S. Representative from Illinois, 1853-69 (1st District 1853-63, 3rd District 1863-69); U.S. Secretary of State, 1869; U.S. Minister to France, 1869-77; candidate for Republican nomination for President, 1880; candidate for Republican nomination for Vice President, 1880.
* Cadwallader Colden Washburn (1818-1882) - U.S. Representative from Wisconsin, 1855-61, 1867-71 (2nd District 1855-61, 6th District 1867-71); general in the Union Army during the Civil War; Governor of Wisconsin, 1872-74. Washburn County, Wisconsin is named for him.
* Charles Ames Washburn (1822-1889) — Went to California for the 1849 Gold Rush; Presidential Elector for California, 1860; U.S. Diplomatic Commissioner to Paraguay, 1861-63; U.S. Minister to Paraguay, 1863-68; novelist; invented an early typewriter.
* William D. Washburn (1831-1912) - Graduate of Bowdoin College, 1854. Member of Minnesota state house of representatives, 1861; U.S. Representative from Minnesota, 1879-85 (3rd District 1879-83, 4th District 1883-85); U.S. Senator from Minnesota, 1889-95.
*Dorilus Morrison, cousin of the Washburn family and first mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota was also born in Livermore.
