The Gate, Newcastle

The Gate is a retail and leisure complex in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The venue lends its name from the street on which it lies, Newgate Street. It is part of the historic Grainger Town area of Newcastle. It was opened on the 28th November 2002 [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2516941.stm Last reel for 1930s cinema] , BBC News] .

The Gate has 19 venues spread across three floors, including a 12 screen Empire Cinema and Aspers Casino. The Gate is also next to Newcastle's China town; there is an entrance on Stowell Street. The Gate building was built to replace the 35 year old, 7 storey Newgate House, which was home to the prolific music venue; The Mayfair club.

The 19,235 m², £80 million venue was built by Land Securities and the 12m tall sculpture outside, "Ellipsis Eclipses" was designed by Danny Lane [ [http://www.commissionsnorth.org/showcase/portfolio/206 The Gate: Ellipsis Eclipses] , Commissions North] . During construction, the 24 meter high [ [http://www.bbc.co.uk/tyne/clubs/reviews/g_m/gate/ Tyne Clubs - The Gate] , BBC] glass glass façade was designed by Space Decks Limited [ [http://www.spacedecks.co.uk/projects/thegate.html Steel and Glass Structures] , Space Decks] . The Odeon Cinema (now Empire) was built to replace the 72 year old cinema on Pilgrim Street [ [http://www.bbc.co.uk/tyne/features/2002/11/odeon_cinema.shtml Tyne Features - Odeon Cinema] , BBC] . The Gate provided 400 new jobs when opened and a further 600 during construction.

In 2004 BDP Lighting won a Lighting Design award for their work at The Gate [ [http://www.bdp.co.uk/html/news/2004/BDPs_Double_Bill_at_Lighting_Awards_3.asp BDP's Double Bill at Lighting Awards (29-Mar-2004)] , Building Design Partnership]
