Gunnar Hökmark

Gunnar Hökmark (born September 19, 1952) is a Swedish politician and Member of the European Parliament for the Moderate Party; part of the European People's Party.

He graduated with a degree in economics in 1975. Hökmark was the president of the Moderate Youth League 1979-1984 and a member of the Swedish Parliament 1982-2004.

He became known during the early 1990s when he stood up for the independence of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania against the Soviet Union through meetings in Stockholm every Monday until independence had been achieved.

When the Moderate Party won the election in 1991, Hökmark was appointed Party Secretary. He served until 2000. He was placed top of the Moderate Party list for the European Parliament in 2004 and was duly elected. He is now the leader of the Moderate Party group.

Hökmark is also the current chairman of the Sweden-Israel Friendship Association.
