Regular season

Season Summary

The Braves started hot winning their first 13 games to start the season, leading the way was Dale Murphy who was to have his first great season by hitting 36 home runs and 109 RBIs.

With a 6-2 win over the San Diego Padres on July 29, the Braves were 61-37 and a 9-game lead in the NL West standings, but they slumped badly as they lost 19 of the last 21 games and by August 19 they were 63-56 and 4 games behind first place Los Angeles Dodgers. But starting August 19 they start roaring back and one month later with an 8-3 win over the San Francisco Giants on September 28 they were in first place to stay as the Braves won their first NL West Division Title since 1969.

Stars Aplenty

Although it was Joe Torre that led the Braves back to the postseason that year, many Braves contributed to this successful season including Bob Horner, who hit 32 home runs and 97 RBIs. On the pitching side, Phil Niekro led the team in wins with a fantastic 17-4 record, and Gene Garber led the team with 30 saves.
