Serbian rock

Serbian rock

Serbian rock is the rock music scene of Serbia. During the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and the 1980s, while Serbia was a constituent republic inside Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Serbian rock scene was a part of SFR Yugoslav rock scene.

History

It emerged in the 1950s with classical rocknroll acts such as Mile Lojpur. During the 1960s the rock scene continued to develop under the influences of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Shadows and others. A prominent group was Crni biseri from Belgrade, featuring Vlada Janković-Džet, a prominent Serbian and former Yugoslav musician, who got his nickname after Jet Harris. The late 1960s and the 1970s were marked by various rock and later hard rock and progressive rock bands like YU grupa, Smak and others. Belgrade, the capitol of Serbia had one of the most vibrant rock music scene in the former Yugoslavia featuring the cult band Riblja čorba. Slovenia was an important center for the Yugoslav Punk rock in the late 1970s, but soon Belgrade also developed its own scene, part of which is featured on the compilation album Artistička radna akcija. The "Paket Aranžman" album was a legendary release of the Serbian New Wave music scene (part of the federal Yugoslav New Wave scene). Paket Aranžman featured the influential bands Šarlo Akrobata, Električni orgazam and Idoli. Many of the Serbian bands during the existence of SFR Yugoslavia were more popular in Croatia than in Serbia (for example Idoli recorded their first album for the Croatian record label Jugoton, while Ekatarina Velika made their first live album in Zagreb.

Drawing on pioneers like Goran Bregović, folk and rock music were combined in Serbia later in the 20th century. Also very popular for mixing rock with folk elements is the Belgrade fraction of Zabranjeno Pušenje known under the name "The No Smoking Orchestra". The band was initially formed in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, but after the breakup of Yugoslavia it split into two separate groups: the one in Sarajevo and the one in Belgrade. The latter gained international popularity. One of the members is the award-winning film director Emir Kusturica.
