Al-Muazzam Turanshah

Al-Muazzam Turanshah

Turanshah, also Turan Shah (Arabic : توران شاه) ("epithet:" al-Malik al-Muazzam Ghayath al-Din Turanshah (Arabic : الملك المعظم غياث الدين توران شاه)) was a son of Sultan As-Salih Ayyub and became Sultan of Egypt for a brief period. He served as the governor of the city of Aleppo when it was invested by the Mongol army in 1259 commanded by Hulagu. Turanshah's defenders held out for a week, and continued resistance from the city's citadel for another month, when it was finally captured and destroyed. Surprisingly, the mongols let the defenders live. [Amitai-Preiss 1995: 1]
