specialty =
occupation = Specialist registrar in Critical Care

spouse = Ric Griffin

Thandie arrived at Holby in episode 'Stargazer' with Consultant Ric Griffin, after becoming engaged to him during his sabbatical in Uganda. Ethiopian born, Thandie illegally escaped to Uganda in 2005 as a result of political tensions, following the murder of her father and the imprisonment of her mother - or so she claimed. When it came to her wedding day, Connie Beauchamp did some digging on Thandie's past and discovered she did not have any qualifications and had no training.

From her arrival in Holby, Thandie repeatedly demonstrated herself to be less than competent as a doctor. She mis-diagnosed and mis-treated patients, clashing as a result with Consultants Diane Lloyd and Lola Griffin. In episode "For Whom The Bell Tolls", she encountered trouble when translating her reference into English, finding it to be uncomplimentary. As a result, her fiance, Ric Griffin, penned a reference for her himself. She engaged in mild flirtation with Consultant Daniel Clifford, and clashed with Ric's daughter, Jess, over her engagement, and with Elliot Hope after she accused him of racial discrimination.

On her wedding day, Connie Beauchamp discovered that Thandie had never actually qualified as a doctor, and upon discovering the truth, Ric ended their marriage hours after it had begun.

Tash had a great friendship will the hospital staff, except Jasmine, whom she constantly sniped at and made comments to. Tash told Kath that the reason for this was that Jasmine's job as nurse practitioner was just a way of giving a fancy title to a nurse who wants more money. Tash learned that her father was coming to Holby to see Meyer about a heart operation that he needed. On his arrival, he makes numerous mistakes and all signs point to Alzheimer's disease. Tash is heartbroken when she realises how ill her father is. She tells him that she will never be married or have children because she is a lesbian, but her father tells her not to worry, she'll make somebody a great wife and mother. Mike Barratt

Infobox character

series = "Holby City"
occupation = Consultant General Surgeon, Keller
spouse =
children =
first = 2x05, 1999
last = 3x30, 2001
portrayer = Clive Mantle
Mike Barratt previously appeared in Casualty as a Consultant in Emergency medicine. The character returned to Holby as a General surgeon who was to work in the hospital's new Keller ward. Mike was a caring man and was passionate about saving life. He counted the staff as his friends, particularly those further down the career ladder, such as the healthcare assistants, a trait which is rarely seen in a Consultant surgeon in Holby City. He enjoyed winding up Meyer - Mike never let Meyer forget how many of his bed's he'd taken for Keller. Mike was also famous for the flamboyant operating caps he wore in theatre. At the end of the second series, Mike severely damaged his leg after stepping on a poacher's trap and rolling hundreds of feet down a hill on a team building course. The series closed with the cliffhanger of whether or not he'd lose his leg. In the series three, he turned to work on crutches, at the end of which, Mike was offered a job in New Zealand, which he refused. By the beginning of the fourth series, Mike had left. It was never explained where he had gone and to this day no one has ever mentioned him.

Michael Beauchamp

Infobox character

last = 8x21, 2006
creator = Richard Stokes
portrayer = Anthony Calf
specialty =
occupation = Chairman of the Board, Holby City Hospital PCT
title =
spouse = Connie Beauchamp
children =
Michael was the husband of Holby Surgeon Connie Beauchamp. He always demonstrated a ruthless streak. He appeared to care about nobody other than himself - one one occasion he had his own wife removed from duty to cover up his own negligence. He was obsessed with success but more for his own benefit than for the welfare of the patients. He took many bribes and pursued affairs with members of staff including long-serving character Chrissie Williams. He favoured nepotism - he promoted Chrissie to Matron simply because of their relationship.

Michael's corruption lead to his downfall. A private hospital had managed to conceal the fact that they had had an outbreak of the highly contagious and (incurable) VRSA Michael was told by the hospital that if he did not conceal the condition then an envelope containing proof about all his underhand dealings would be sent to the Secretary of State for Health. Michael sought to contain the illness but in vain and caused the death of patients including Chrissie's biological father Frank. Michael was arrested for controstructive act manslaughter. He spent ten months in prison (he was released on appeal).

Julie's alter ego - "Crystal" - was exposed when a member of the lap dancing club was admitted to the hospital after suffering a heart attack; he recognised her straight away. When Karen found out, she reprimanded Julie and told her that she could have Jasmine's job whilst she recovered from being stabbed. During the second series, Julie starts a relationship with one of the builders who is renevating the ward to allow for Keller to open. Once he found out she has a kid, he made his excuses and made a hasty exit. During series three, Martin, Julie's ex husband and father of her child turned up. Background

Daniel Clifford is a General Surgical Consultant at Holby City Hospital. He was initially employed at Holby on a locum basis, on the understanding he would expose suspected corruption within the General Surgical department. He has been engaged three times, with each engagement ending in the respective fiancées being abandoned on the planned wedding day.

Overview

During his employment at Holby City Hospital, Dan has exhibited consistent egotistical and sexist behaviour. He refers to surgical registrar Jac Naylor by the nickname 'Olive' - a reference to her diminutive stature and comparison to the Popeye character Olive Oyl - and has also commented on the weight of female colleagues Lola Griffin and Diane Lloyd. He is not afraid to question the judgment of his colleagues, and in episode 'Into The Dark' clashed for the first time with the formidable figure of hospital dominance Connie Beauchamp, emerging the victor of the encounter.

Little is known of Dan's past beyond his three failed engagements. He has a connection with senior house officer Maddy Young. It was speculated in episode 'Face Value' that the pair may have previously worked together in Middlesex. Dan also has a keen interest in golf, and has had a small golf lawn constructed in the hospital carpark.

torylines

Dan arrived at Holby City early in series nine. His position was initially that of Locum General Surgical Consultant, temporarily replacing Ric Griffin - away undertaking aid work in Uganda. On his first day, he showed a keen interest in kidney patient Pete Golding, who had secretly received an illegal porcine kidney in an operation undertaken by Abra Durant, and, inadvertently, Ric Griffin.

Although Abra, assisted by Acting Sister Kyla Tyson, was temporarily able to cover up the details of the operation, Dan's interest in the matter continued. It was revealed that Dan was covertly working for hospital manager Christopher Sutherland, in order to expose the suspected corruption within the department which had led to Ric Griffin's departure. When Abra began stealing used drugs from the hospital pharmacy to send to Africa, although it took several weeks, Dan eventually caught him out in episode 'The End of the World as We Know It'. Revealing a benevolent streak, Dan admitted an admiration for the wild card surgeon, and allowed him to leave Holby with his record unblemished.

When Maddy Young arrived at Holby City in episode 'Face Value', it was revealed that she and Dan share a history, although what this entails is as yet unknown. Also in this episode, Dan promoted Diane Lloyd to the position of General Surgical Consultant in the wake of Abra's departure. As Diane is now working in the position on a locum basis, it is implied that Dan has accepted a more permanent role within the hospital.

In past episodes, Dan and Diane have shared a mild flirtation. He has, however, made it clear in the past that he does not fare well in long term relationships. This was illustrated by the appearance of his most recent abandoned fiancée, Camilla, who left Keller ward in temporary disarray during Dan's first appearance when she violently reproached him for breaking their engagement on their wedding day, and leaving for their honeymoon alone. However, due to Diane's untimley death in a car accident, Dan's relationship with her cannot progress, however he did not seem particularly disturbed at the news of Diane's death.

He left suddenly for France following an affair with Louise Clifford, his brother's wife. He left his close friend Maddy behind. For a few moments she was going to go with him but they both decided that it would be best if she stayed in Holby.

Lola Griffin is a Consultant and is Holby City's Clinical Operations Manager in charge of Holby's Post Operative Care Team, based on Keller. She was formerly in charge of the emergency medical team in the AAU department. She arrived at the hospital during the last few months of Series 7. Lola is caring and committed and always gives 100% to her work.

Her grandmother's words of wisdom often creep up in conversations with Lola, with her giving out advice or making a statement followed by "...as my late lamented grandmother used to say."

In her old role, Lola was frequently at odds with the Emergency Department next door, claiming that patients are palmed off to AAU unnecessarily. Many arguments within the department traced back to Lola, most notably her constant disagreements with Sutherland, the hospital's ex Chief Executive Officer. Kyla has also come under fire from Lola, after she witnessed Kyla slapping her son Max when he became uncontrollable. Although she appears to be very hard faced, Lola is a kind and considerate person who cares passionately for her patients and her colleagues.

torylines

Leanne

Lola Griffin grew close to girl called Kerry, who had a daughter, Leanne. She was often admitted to the department due to drug use and allergic reations, which ultimately lead to Kerry's death. Lola decided to take Leanne home instead of contacting social services - who found out in the end. Lola was encouraged to apply for guardianship of the baby which was granted, until Leanne's father Steve was able to look after her (who was also a recovering drug user). Lola was not impressed that Leanne had to go back to live with Steve, and she got Dan Clifford on side and turned up at Steve's house to find him unconscious after taking drugs. Steve died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, and Lola was forced to hand Leanne over to social services after she couldn't cope with a baby and her career.

Heart attack

After yet another day filled with arguments, on 24th April Lola Griffin collapsed in the lift at the end of a hectic day, clutching her chest in agony. Several arguments with her ex-husband Ric's wife Thandie Griffin and a vote of no confidence from Mark Wlliams after Sutherland criticized the way Lola has been heading up AAU finally took it's toll on her.

The team tried to get her heart started again, which took several attempts. Lola later needed an operation to correct Triple Vessel Disease (TVD) which was carried out by Connie Beauchamp, who at this point went into labour. Sam and Joseph finished the operation and Ric Griffin stayed with his ex-wife Lola all day and night, making sure she wasn't alone. As morning dawned on the next day, Lola awoke and thanked Ric for caring for her and staying with her as she lay in HDU recovering.

Redundancy and exit

In the episode "Separate Lives" aired in September 2008, CEO Jayne Grayson brought Lola to her office to discuss her redundancy. When Lola threatened to tell the BMA and battle against the hospital trust, Ric tried to calm the situation and reasoned with Jayne thus getting Lola an increased amount of severance pay and able to not have to work the rest of her contract. Later, as Lola left the hospital, Ric revealed he knew Lola had a job offer from a private clinic, and had reasoned with Jayne Grayson not out of fear of the hospital coming under fire from a tribunal from the BMA, but to help out Lola. He joked with her about how he was disgusted with her for "fleecing the NHS" and using up money that could have been used on patients; she replied by saying "As my dear late, lamented grandmother used to say: Screw them". The two settled their past differences and she left. Lola departed for good in the episode "Mad World".

In popular culture

The 16 November 2007 "Children in Need" charity telethon contained a musical performance from "Holby City" cast members. Clarke performed a soul version of Aretha Franklin's signature song, Respect, with backing vocals provided by Rakie Ayola (Kyla Tyson), Nadine Lewington (Maddy Young) and Phoebe Thomas (Maria Kendall).cite web|url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2007/11_november/17/cin.shtml|title=Record-breaking £19m raised by BBC Children in Need so far...|publisher=BBC.co.uk|date=17 November 2007|accessdate=2007-11-17] On 28 February 2008, BBC Two cooking programme "Ready Steady Cook" broadcast a "Holby City" special, featuring Sharon D. Laura's mother suggested the idea for a scene in which Sandy's colleagues were told that she had secretly resigned from "Holby City" and gone to start a new life in Australia after winning the lottery, and that she had left some of the money to her friends at the hospital.

Jasmine was originally a Staff Nurse in Cardiothoracics on Darwin Ward. She was a strong-minded, and often opinionated nurse who felt strongly for her colleagues and patients. In the first episode of Holby, Jasmine goes for an interview to be deputy Ward Sister, a role her best friend Julie Fitzjohn is also applying for. Jasmine gets the job, and Julie isn't best pleased as she secretly has money problems and really needed the promotion. By the end of the series Julie's anger towards Jasmine intensifies as she has to resort to working as a lap dancer to raise money to look after her daughter, Rosie.

Relationship with Carl

Jasmine was engaged to Carl, an IT user support technician at the hospital. They both argued when he decided to set a date for their wedding when she hadn't even been consulted about it. Later in that episode, Carl hit Jasmine outside the hospital and she told him to get away from her.

tabbing

At the end of the first series, the nurses on the ward are not pleased when they have to control some friends of a patient, Darren Ingram. They firstly locked his chest drain, which nearly killed him and Victoria Merrick managed to stabalise Darren. During this time, Darren's mates were stealing drugs from Darwin's drug store, and Jasmine walked in on them as the alarm was bleeping. She asked them to hand the drugs over but they refused and told her she'd have to catch them first. Jasmine gave chase to the thieves, but there was no one around to help her, so she chased them down a set of stairs and along an unused corridor. When the thieves realised there was nowhere left to run, one of them grabbed a surgical instrument from a tray and stabbed Jasmine in the chest - he then threw her backwards and she hit her back on a porter's trolley, then collapsed on the floor and passed out, bleeding from her chest.

In the final episode of the series, Jasmine was rushed to theatre. As Anton Meyer was away giving a demonstration operation, it was down to Nick Jordan to repair the damage to Jasmine's heart. After the operation on Jasmine's heart, there were further complications and she was bleeding in her abdomen. At this time Meyer returns and is pleased to see Nick saved Jasmine. During the operation, it is discovered she was in very early pregnancy stages - she also arrests, and Meyer had to shock her heart to get it going again.

Trivia: During episodes in Series 3, Jasmine wears a number of low-cut tops and her stomach is also frequently on show - no scars are present from heart surgery or abdomen surgery.

Miscarriage

At the start of Series 2, Jasmine returns to work, still pregnant, however, she planned to have an abortion. Carl soon learnt of this after Julie told him and he threatened to get an injunction against her. At the end of the episode Julie goes to Jasmine's flat to apologise for telling Carl, but as Jasmine tells her to get lost, she develops stomach cramps and begs Julie to help her. In Series 2 Episode 2, Jasmine is back in hospital as a patient yet again. She loses the baby as Julie is there visiting and ward sister Karen tells her to take as much time as she needed. Jasmine returned to work a week later, with a positive attitude and determined to get back on with her nursing career.

Change of job

Following the opening of the general surgery ward, Keller, Jasmine became the new Nurse Practitioner. She was frequently at odds with Tash Bandara, who seemed to have some sort of personal vendetta against Jasmine. Tash was constantly questioning Jasmine's judgement and making sarcastic comments. Towards the end of the second series Tash seems to soften towards Jasmine and during Series 3 the pair get on fine.

Romance with Steve Waring

During Series 3, with the introduction of Otter Ward, the kids ward, Jasmine often worked with Steve Waring - a staff nurse on Otter. This eventually ended up with Jasmine and Steve falling in love, and they slept together whilst Steve was married to his wife, Emma. Robbie, Steve's son, found out and threatened to reveal Steve's affair, but he never did.

Departure

At the start of Series 4, we learn that Jasmine has moved on from the hospital and Steve tells Danny that he's over her. Jasmine's exit happened off screen between 3x30 (5th June 2001) and 4x01 (9th October 2001).

Nick Jordan is portrayed by actor Michael French. He is the only original cast member to ever return to the show.

Overview

When he first arrived in Holby Mr. Jordan proved to be an intelligent man and adept surgeon but his tendency to panic coupled with his inability to remain calm under pressure hindered his performance when operating on patients. Although Holby City began in 1999, surgeon Nick Jordan was seen in an episode of Casualty in late 1998.

Nick was accused by his boss and mentor Anton Meyer of being arrogant. Jordan's refusal to accept that he was doing more harm than good in situations was often a source of disaster.

Nick's career nearly ended twice. On one occasion he saved a young girl by forcing open her car door before the car exploded, but slit his wrists open in the process. After a long period of rehabilitation he was able to return to work but he was nearly invalided out of the service as the loss of blood nearly left permanent damage which would have made it impossible for him to hold a scalpel properly. Meyer warned him: "You may have saved that girl's life Mr. Jordan, but you can save 10,000 lives, if you look after your hands".

Nick impressed Meyer greatly, when in the last episode of the first series he saved Jasmine's life after she had been stabbed in the heart. Meyer promptly returned from operating on a patient at a demonstration some 100 miles away from Holby. On his return he arrived back at the hospital to find Nick had repaired the damage to Jasmine's heart. The final scene of the episode sees Meyer congratulate Nick on his work. The pair shake hands and Meyer drives off in a taxi.

Nick's private life and work life frequently overlapped as his estranged wife worked in Holby. A reconciliation with her caused him to respond to an emergency too late, costing a patient her life. Facing a tribunal he decided to plead guilty. The tribunal ruled not to discipline him. He decided however to resign.

He returned briefly in the 2005 Christmas special episode after a five year absence; a more mature and seasoned surgeon; where he demonstrated supreme confidence and quick-thinking under pressure, inconsistent with his character and more in keeping with his former boss and mentor Anton Meyer . He returned to Holby in February 2006 as a Consultant in General Surgery, having changed specialty from Cardiothoracics to the entirely different discipline of General Surgery, apparently without the long period of retraining required for such a career change.

Sam had a relationship with Alex before moving on to Ric Griffin, who she jilted at the Altar. Just before her exit, Sam told the parents of a young boy that an operation he was due to have was unsafe. The boy's parents decided to remove him from hospital, and his condition worsened. When he was re-admitted, he was taken to theatre but died. Meyer wanted to know who had told the parents to remove the child from hospital. Alex told Meyer it was Sam, and she took her revenge by going to the press about Meyer being a "meddler maniac" - doing these operations on children. She left Holby after Meyer put the word out all over the area about what she had done.

Diane was an ambitious surgeon, whose obliging nature had increasingly seen her colleagues take advantage of her. Her love life had been notably disastrous – dating a number of hospital staff and marrying former Consultant Obstetrician Owen Davies, only to be left reeling by his affair with his former lover, Sister Chrissie Williams.

Diane enjoyed a number of flings at Holby. She was rarely seen to want commitment, and on her arrival at Holby she made it clear to Danny Shaughnessy that she was only interested in sex.

She had been involved in many story lines involving things such as: her marriage to Owen Davies and eventual loss of their child and finding out about his affair, the death of her sister, the child abuse she'd suffered, coming face to face with an old teacher of hers at medical school who had raped her and then she faced allegations she didn't give him the proper care resulting in his death. Most notably though would be the on-going on/off relationship with Ric Griffin after they kissed in Ghana.

She had recently been promoted to Locum General Surgical Consultant following the departure of Abra Durant from the department, and has been seen to engage in mild flirtation with Daniel Clifford.

After letting things get on top of her and feeling betrayed by long time friend Ric Griffin, Diane handed in her letter of resignation to Connie Beauchamp, bypassing Ric. Elliot Hope, however offered her sabbatical and let her borrow his car to go to his friend's cottage in which Diane would house-sit for a couple of months. Diane accepted the offer – but as Elliot and Connie talk together praising Diane, Elliot received a phone call informing him that Diane had been involved in a car accident where her car was hit by a train and that she had died at the scene.

Diane was one of Holby City's longest serving characters, arriving during the Meyer era, and had been in the show for almost five years.

] Stuart made his final appearance on 12 February 2008, in episode "The Extra Mile".

Creation

In the summer of 2007, "Holby City" actress Amanda Mealing took a period of leave from the show, during which her character Connie Beauchamp was written out as taking a sabbatical abroad. As the character had held the most senior Consultant's position on the show's Cardiothoracic ward, it was necessary to introduce a new character to fill her role. Conor Mullen was cast in the role of Stuart, and signed to the show for 3-4 months.cite news|url=http://www.holby.tv/cgi-bin/News/fullnews.cgi?newsid1193169525,61901,|title=New Holby Cast|publisher=Holby.tv Database|date=23 October 2007|accessdate=2007-11-09]

Development

The character of Stuart was initially billed by BBC Publicity in the following manner:

"Holby City" series producer Diana Kyle described Stuart as "dishy...good-looking and sexy",Citation
last= | first= | author-link= | publication-date=November 2007 | date= | year= | title=Ask the BOSS! | periodical=Inside Soap

] while Conor Mullen said of his character: "As a locum, Stuart knows he's not going to be at Holby for ever, so he doesn't care about hospital politics. Stuart also gets the nurses' back up a bit by making changes. The man's a bit of a renegade!"Citation | last=Horsley | first=Jon | author-link= | publication-date=3 November 2007 | date=

]

This lack of regard for hospital politics was demonstrated throughout the character's first episodes. He was seen to irritate Chrissie Williams, Sister of the hospital's Darwin ward by removing donation boxes from the wards, and attempting to implement changes to the established filing system for his own benefit. However, it also became apparent that the character had a romantic interest in Chrissie, heightened when a crossbow attack was launched within the hospital.cite episode |title=Into The Void|episodelink=List of Holby City episodes/Series Ten#Series Ten .282007-2008.29|series=Holby City|serieslink=Holby City|network=BBC|season=10|number=10|airdate= 2007-12-19] Mullen said of the stoyline: "It is carnage. ] Upon discovering that Chrissie was alive and well, the two characters shared a brief kiss, which Mullen stated "moves things forward between them. Stuart and Chrissie are both aware that this could go further – and it possibly will!"

Stuart arrives at Holby City Hospital in episode "The Apprentice", to take over from Cardiothoracic Consultant Connie Beauchamp on a locum basis. Stuart and Chrissie's relationship progresses well, with them both declaring their love for each other after just a few weeks of dating. However, Stuart displays a jealous, possessive streak, and begins to grow annoyed with Chrissie's friendship with her ex-boyfriend, Sam Strachan. Chrissie discovered Stuart has hidden a set of Sam's notes to make him seem incompetent at work, and terminates their relationship. In episode "Final Cut" Stuart becomes drunk and hostile. After a heated argument with Chrissie, he slashes her face with a scalpel and then gags her and holds her hostage while he stitches her wound. In his final episode, "The Extra Mile", he tricks Connie into believing that Chrissie was self-harming. Connie however, realises that Stuart is lying and she and Chrissie set him up. Stuart tries to escape, but is stopped by Sam and Kyla. He is arrested, and driven away by the police.

Reception

Upon announcing Mullen's casting as Stuart, The Press Association deemed the character's duration on the show to be "short - but explosive."cite news|url=http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5hdnQD80a4p9FJsxFXp4k8rIsm9-w|title=Holby City gets new characters|publisher=Press Association|date=23 October 2007|accessdate=2007-11-15]
