Alan Smith is an Australian former rugby league footballer of the 1970s and 80s.

Biography

Originally from the Toowoomba area, Smith played in the Brisbane Rugby League, before moving to the New South Wales Rugby League premiership to play for the North Sydney Bears. In the BRL, he played for Brisbane Valleys, and represented the Queensland team in 1977 and 1979. It was the 1979 game where he scored a record 4 tries in Qlds loss to NSW. This performance may have been the reason he was selected in the inaugural State of Origin match for Queensland. Smith retired after a season with the Canberra Raiders in 1982. He has since been a selector for the Queensland Origin team in the 1990s.
