Rabbits are commonly used animals for animal experiments. Other common animals used are mice, rats and invertebrates. In 1972, around 450.000 rabbits were used for experiments in the United States, decreasing to around 240.000 in 2006, following the general trend of less animals being used for experiments during especially the last ten years. Rabbits have been used in the past for many ground-breaking experiments, including the development of the first oral contraceptive in the 1950's by Pincus, Rock and Chang at the Worcester Institute in Massachusetts, a finding that revolutionized the concept of contraception.
